How to start using Linux 😎😍

Linux Mascot

If you are done with using Windows, that common interface where you can't customize or can't learn new, just as same as it was when it was made in a factory. Then you can make your hands dirty by using Linux.

Linux is everywhere in the supercomputer, server, desktop, game consoles, mobile, smartwatches, TV, cars, planes, smart refrigerators, nuclear submarines, The entire Internet

Firstly Linux is not an Operating System, it is a Kernel (core) and GNU-Linux is OS.

How it all started?

In the 1990s a 21-year-old Finnish boy named Linus Torvalds wants to use UNIX but as it is expensive and licenced. So, he used a Do-It-Your-Own kit of MINIX and developed a kernel which he called Linux Kernel. At that time it has only 10000 lines of code, but thanks to the community and Open-Source initiative that make it as 10 millions lines of code in 2013.

When the Microsoft Windows has conquered the market of Desktop computers then Linux tries to put it in there to Server-side. Firstly Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer criticized it calling it as cancer but soon they realize when IBM put the investment of 1 Billion dollars.

Why learn Linux?

  • Using Linux teach you a lot. You would how to use the command line, how to built software using binary etc.
  • Developers love Linux. Companies use Linux as the primary OS when it comes to software development and deployment. So, chances are high that use it.

In Linux there are many distributions use can are called flavours or distros. You can either do fresh install swiping the old OS or do a dual boot or use both by using GRUB menu or you can just use Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in windows where you can use Linux on your Windows machine by using command Line
"There are lots of Linux users who don't care how the kernel works, but want to use it. That's is a tribute to how good Linux is"  - Linus Torvalds.
